These are used on the transfer case to transmission mounting studs. Free spinning nuts are necessary to mount the transfer case because they work as a lock nut by creating tension when tightened, however, when removing them, as soon as the tension is broken they will unscrew like a regular nut without backing out the stud. Other types of lock nuts would back the stud out during removal and regular hex nuts would come loose during use.
